Exactly four years ago today Chase proposed to me while hiking through Arches National park in Moab, Utah. Chase is remarkable at many things and surprising me is definitely one of them. While I was head-over-heels for the boy, marriage was something we had never discussed. So you can imagine my astonishment when this handsome young man was on one knee asking the most amazing questions, “Marry me?”
I had a pretty good idea of who Chase was then. I knew that he was a good person and treated me with respect. I knew he had a soft spot for animals. I knew he could change a flat, climb rocks, run for miles, and cook a pretty decent meal over a campfire. Most importantly, I knew what and in whom he believed.
Yet, just like his proposal, he has astounded me time and time again. He perpetually keeps me safe even though I joke with him about sounding like a dad. He pushes me to try harder and to be better. He helps family and friends without hesitation and expects nothing in return. The special bond between he and Nova, WOW, it’s as though she has hearts in her eyes when she sees him. He takes Jakers everywhere and makes sure that he is comfortable. (You should see Jake’s set-up for roadtrips!) He has taught me to do all (and more) of the things mentioned above and has done so with patience and grace. He not only has strong beliefs, he stands up for the things in which he is passionate about.
He doesn’t give himself enough credit but truth is, neither do I. He continually enriches my life. He takes the simple things and makes them stupendous. My world changed for the better the moment I laid eyes on him. I will spend the remainder of my days attempting to show him how much he is needed, appreciated, and loved.
“I know sometimes
it’s still hard to let me see you
in all your cracked perfection,
but please know:
whether it’s the days you burn more brilliant than the sun
or the nights you collapse into my lap
your body broken into a thousand questions,
you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.
I will love you when you are a still day.
I will love you when you are a hurricane.”
